Good morning,
Muyiwa Gbadegesin has spent the weekend begging. Governor Sanwo-Olu asked the LAWMA MD to resign over the heaps of refuse still choking various parts of the city. The governor declared a state of emergency on waste in September. He inspected Olusosun. He gave instructions. The refuse did not move. So the man appointed to fix it has been asked to go, and he is reportedly calling on prominent Lagosians to plead his case. A resignation is a signal; however, it is not a solution. The next MD will inherit the same PSP operators, the same dumpsite fires, and the same streets.
On Monday evening, a diesel tanker fell off Otedola Bridge and exploded underneath it. The bridge slopes steeply, heavy trucks lose control, and in June 2018 a petrol tanker explosion there killed more than 60 people and burnt dozens of vehicles. That disaster produced calls for safety barriers and speed limits. Those calls produced very little. Eight years later, the same bridge claimed more lives, and the government has announced no new measures. A few kilometres away, more than 30 people surrounded a red Lamborghini Urus in traffic near the VGC bridge, pressing so close the driver could not move. Petrol is above ₦1,400 a litre. Food inflation is 19.59 per cent. The social safety nets are thin. One road kills you through negligence. The other humiliates you through desperation.
In a Federal High Court in Abuja, Omoyele Sowore rose from the gallery, pointed at a robed lawyer, and demanded a retraction for being called a tout. The exchange was filmed. It spread within hours. Sowore is standing trial for cyberstalking, has been detained more than once, and is still asking Nigerians to hand him the presidency. That is a job that comes with insults by the tonne, most of them worse than one word muttered in a courtroom. A man who cannot absorb a slight without turning it into a spectacle is telling us something about how he would handle a country that will not always be polite to him. Meanwhile, in the same week, Jordan Wike, the FCT Minister’s son, faced claims that he took $2.1 million in a Guzape and Katampe land deal, which he denies, producing his passport to show he was abroad and insisting his signature was forged. The EFCC has had the petition since December 2025 and a reminder since 5 October 2026. No charges. One man cannot take an insult. The other cannot be reached by the law.
The quieter arithmetic is just as brutal. Kwara doctors are among the least paid in the country, with some losing between ₦30,000 and ₦50,000 monthly to unauthorised deductions, in a state where the ratio is one doctor to more than 9,000 patients. Traders in Lagos lose between ₦15,000 and ₦25,000 every month to fruits and vegetables that rot in open trucks and markets without cold chain.
We wrap up with some great news. In Benue, police rescued Rev. Fr. John Otache and seven others from kidnappers, arresting two suspects. Eight people came home. Praise the Lord!
