A youth-led group has launched a national initiative to recruit and train 300,000 volunteers to help curb electoral violence ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Youth Electoral Guards Observer initiative is a flagship project of the Nigerian Youth Policy Development Advocacy, the Nigeria Youths in Politics and other partners. The national stakeholder steering committee chairman, Blessing Oyefeso, unveiled the application portal on Thursday in Abuja.
Nigeria’s elections have long been marred by violence, intimidation and thuggery. In 2019, dozens were killed in election-related clashes. In 2023, violence disrupted voting in several states. INEC has faced criticism over its capacity to secure the process. Civil society has stepped in with observation and education programmes. The current initiative is the largest youth-led effort yet.
Oyefeso said the initiative is based on the belief that young people should not just participate as voters but own the electoral process. He cited a national poll finding that 61% of Nigerians may abstain from voting in 2027 due to fear of political violence, while 34% lack trust in electoral institutions. “Recent political thuggery, intimidation and violence in Benue, Delta and other parts of Nigeria further confirm these findings,” he said.
The initiative will operate an Early Warning Rapid Response Mechanism. Trained volunteers will identify, document, verify and track electoral risks and incidents in real time. Verified information will be shared with security agencies for swift intervention. Applications have opened for the first 50,000 master trainers. Oyefeso emphasised that the initiative does not seek to replace INEC, security agencies or accredited observers.
Winners: Nigerian youths, who gain a platform. Civil society, which gains a partner. INEC, which gains complementary support. Security agencies, which gain intelligence. Losers: Political thugs, who face monitoring. Parties that rely on violence, which face scrutiny. The 61% who fear voting, if violence persists. No serious losers if the initiative works.
Bottom Line: Three hundred thousand volunteers. A portal. A warning mechanism. The 2027 election will be violent. The youth are trying to stop it. The police have pledged support. The success depends on coordination and courage.
