World Cup topped Nigerians’ Google searches
Google data shows the 2026 FIFA World Cup dominated Nigerians’ searches between January and July, followed by the Winter Olympics, AFCON and the Iran conflict.
Google Trend data on Friday showed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup dominated Nigerians’ Google searches between January and July, ranking far ahead of other major events. The Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google West Africa, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, said in a statement that search data reflected what Nigerians were genuinely interested in at any given time.
Kola-Ogunlade said that the data showed strong search interest in the Super Eagles’ campaign, Shakira and Burna Boy’s opening performance and Spain’s eventual 1-0 victory over Argentina. He said that the AFCON heartbreak also drove significant searches in January after Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost their semi-final to host Morocco on penalties. The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics surprisingly attracted heavy Nigerian search traffic in February, including searches about ice hockey in spite of Nigeria having no team at the games.
The data reveals the pulse of the nation. The World Cup topped the list, but the Winter Olympics, AFCON and global tensions also captured attention. The “67” Gen Z meme, celebrity feuds and the Iran conflict all featured prominently. The search bar does not lie.
This echoes the 2022 World Cup search trends, which also showed Nigerians’ passion for football. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a nation united by its love for the beautiful game.
The winners: Google, which has captured the nation’s attention; and the Nigerian public, who are engaging with the world. The losers: the events that did not make the list; and the Nigerian government, which must pay attention to what Nigerians are searching for.
Bottom Line: The World Cup dominated Nigerians’ searches. The data reveals the nation’s interests. The question is whether the government is paying attention.
