What was billed as a 5-kilometre Independence Day run became something else entirely. Youths gathered at PTI Junction in Warri, Delta State, on Wednesday morning. The organisers, a group called Soft Nigeria, began distributing green polo shirts. The shirts carried the group’s branding. Inside, concealed, was an image of President Bola Tinubu. Participants noticed. They reacted. The run did not happen.
Fitness events as campaign vehicles are not new. In 2022, Lagos walkathons distributed APC-branded water bottles and caps. In 2023, “Obidient” supporters organised their own runs to canvass votes. The tactic is straightforward. Gather a crowd. Give them merchandise. Let the images spread on social media. It works when the crowd is sympathetic. It fails when it is not. Warri’s youths were not sympathetic.
The participants saw the shirts and rejected them. They tore the polos apart. Some set them on fire. Others chanted “OBI! OBI! OBI!” in support of Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate. The crowd then moved to boycott the run entirely. Videos circulated on social media. No injuries were reported. The protest was peaceful. The message was not.
The deception is the core issue. Participants arrived expecting a fitness event. They found campaign merchandise. Organisers had embedded a political message inside a community activity. That breach of trust triggered the backlash. Delta State is a PDP stronghold, but the Southeast and South-South have significant NDC and Obi support. Warri is a battleground. The organisers miscalculated. They assumed the crowd would take the shirts and run.
The political divisions are sharp. Independence Day is meant to be non-partisan. Soft Nigeria turned it into a campaign stop. The youths rejected that. They turned the event into a counter-rally. Both sides used the same platform. One lost control of it.
Winners: Peter Obi, who gains a viral moment of grassroots support. The Warri youths, who assert their political independence. Social media, which gains content. The NDC, which gains visibility without spending a naira.
Losers: Soft Nigeria, whose event collapsed. The APC, which is associated with a failed deception. The organisers, whose reputations suffer. The Independence Day run, which did not happen. Anyone who hoped a fitness event could rise above politics.
Bottom Line: Warri youths came to run. They found campaign shirts. They tore them up and chanted Obi’s name instead. The organisers tried to hide politics inside a polo. The youths found it. In 2027, the South-South will not be won by tricks. It will be won by persuasion. Soft Nigeria tried a trick. It failed.
