President Bola Tinubu prayed inside the Ka’abah in Makkah. The Custodian of the Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, granted the access. The president led Nigeria’s delegation into the holy site. Sheikh Dahlulah Muthawal of Masjid al-Haram led him in.
Access to the interior of the Ka’abah is rare. It is granted by the Saudi royal court, usually to heads of state and select dignitaries. The Ka’abah is the direction of Muslim prayer. Pilgrims circle it during Hajj and Umrah, but they do not enter it. Nigerian presidents have made Umrah trips before. In 2023, Tinubu performed Umrah after his inauguration. The current visit is a diplomatic gesture as much as a spiritual one.
Tinubu thanked King Salman for the opportunity. He described the honour as “a historic and deeply cherished spiritual experience.” He said it reflected the longstanding friendship, mutual respect and cooperation between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. He said faith in Allah had strengthened his conviction that his emergence as Nigeria’s leader was “an extraordinary blessing that must be matched with dedicated service to the country.”
Photographs from the visit circulated online. They showed the president inside the holy site. The images were shared by state media and the presidency. The visit coincides with a period of economic strain at home. Fuel prices remain high. Food inflation is at 19.59 per cent. The government is defending its reform programme. A spiritual visit offers a different kind of image: calm, dignified and abroad.
Winners: Tinubu, who gained a rare honour. The Saudi royal court, which reinforced its relationship with Nigeria. State media, which gained powerful imagery. Losers: Critics who see the trip as a distraction from domestic hardship. Nigerians who cannot afford the pilgrimage. No serious losers if the visit strengthens bilateral ties.
Bottom Line: A president prayed inside the Ka’abah. It is a rare privilege. It is also a political image. Faith and diplomacy are intertwined. Nigerians will judge the trip by what follows at home.
