Three Oyo abduction convicts get life imprisonment
The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men linked to the Oyo school abduction to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to terrorism charges.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men linked to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area to life imprisonment. Justice Salim Ibrahim ruled that the sentence would take effect from the date of their arrest. The convicts, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa and Shamsu Adamu Sani, were found guilty on charges related to terrorism and the kidnapping after pleading guilty to some counts, including concealing information about the attack and belonging to Darul Salam, an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru.
Umar also admitted to providing training and instructions to group members through a WhatsApp platform. The Federal Government said the trio helped facilitate the May 2026 school abduction, in which 46 pupils and teachers were kidnapped. Most victims were later rescued during a military operation, while eight suspected gang members were arrested. The court rejected pleas for leniency and imposed life sentences on all three convicts.
The swift conviction and sentencing send a strong signal that the courts will not tolerate terrorism. The guilty pleas saved the court time and resources, and the life sentences reflect the gravity of the offences. However, the masterminds of the abduction remain at large, and the fight against terrorism is far from over.
This echoes the 2014 Chibok kidnapping cases, which also involved guilty pleas and convictions. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: the judicial process holding terrorists accountable for their actions.
The winners: the victims of the Oyo abduction, who have seen justice done; and the Nigerian government, which has demonstrated its commitment to prosecuting terrorists. The losers: the convicts, who will spend the rest of their lives in prison; and the terrorists still at large, who are being pursued by security forces.
