Three suspects have been arrested after a woman’s dead body was discovered in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State. The council chairman, Felix Gonung, disclosed the arrests. The suspects were transferred to the police headquarters in Jos. Investigators recovered substances suspected to be fetish materials. The arrests come amid growing concerns after a second body was discovered in the area.
Ritual killings are a recurring crime in Nigeria. In 2019, police arrested suspects in Lagos and Ogun over ritual murders. In 2021, similar cases emerged in Kwara and Ondo. The practice is driven by belief in supernatural power and profit from human parts. Traditional rulers and religious leaders have condemned it. Enforcement is difficult. Communities often protect suspects. Evidence is hard to secure.
Gonung spoke with journalists in Pankshin on Friday. He said the three suspects were arrested following the discovery of the woman’s body last month. He also disclosed that security agencies were investigating the discovery of a young man’s body at Monday Market on 6 October. The circumstances surrounding the two deaths remain unclear. It has not been established whether the cases are connected. Gonung said the young man’s death might be linked to cult activities among students or criminal elements. He did not provide evidence.
Gonung vowed to work with security agencies to address the incidents. “I swore an oath to protect the lives and property of my people,” he said. He said the council planned to introduce a policy requiring landlords and hotel operators to provide information about their tenants and guests. The measure is intended to help identify criminal elements using rented accommodation as cover.
Pankshin has historically maintained relative peace. The recent incidents have sparked public anxiety. Residents have renewed calls for vigilance.
Winners: The police, which made arrests. The council chairman, who shows action. Communities, if the crackdown works. Losers: The deceased woman and young man. Their families. Residents of Pankshin, who fear for their safety. The suspects, who face prosecution.
Bottom Line: Three suspects are in custody. Fetish materials were recovered. Two bodies in one month. Pankshin is on edge. The police must investigate. The community must cooperate. Ritual killing is a crime. It must be punished.
