Team Nigeria targets 20 gold medals at Commonwealth Games

The first batch of Team Nigeria athletes has departed for Glasgow, targeting 20 gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a successful pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen.

The first batch of Team Nigeria athletes and officials departed their pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen on July 21 bound for Glasgow, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. A second batch will join them on July 24. The National Sports Commission confirmed the contingent completed successful training sessions free of injuries and is targeting an ambitious 20 gold medals.

Gabriel Opuana, head throwing coach for Team Nigeria, praised the Aberdeen preparation camp as the best-run logistics setup in decades for Nigerian athletics. He noted that athletes received full kit supplies, consistent daily allowances and world-class training facilities without logistical hitches, setting a strong foundation for peak performance when competition begins on July 23.

The 20 gold medal target is ambitious. Nigeria has never won that many gold medals at a Commonwealth Games, with the country’s best performance being 11 gold medals at the 1994 Games in Victoria, Canada. The target reflects the government’s confidence in the team’s preparation and the enhanced welfare package announced earlier.

The winners: Team Nigeria athletes, who have received strong preparation and support; and the NSC, which has organised a successful pre-Games camp. The losers: the athletes who do not win medals; and the Nigerian public, which has high expectations.
