The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has denied receipt of a report on sale of kidney in Nyanya area of Abuja as being circulated in the social media. The Command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja. Adeh said the clarification followed publications being circulated on social media, alleging that the command had confirmed reports that young people residing around Nyanya area of the FCT had sold their kidneys for money.
She said the publications had also alleged that an agent in Mararaba area of Nasarawa state was purchasing the kidneys from the young people. “The Police Command in the FCT wishes to categorically state that it has neither received nor confirmed any report of such nature. No statement or communication to that effect has emanated from the command,” she said.
Adeh urged the public to disregard the said publication and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of causing unnecessary fear, panic and apprehension among residents. She enjoined anyone with information regarding the alleged human organ trafficking, or any other security concern within the FCT, to promptly report to the nearest Police Station or to the command through the provided phone numbers.
The winners: the police, who have clarified the situation; and the Nigerian public, who have been urged to verify information. The losers: those who spread the false report; and the Nigerian public, who may have been alarmed by the unverified claims.
Bottom Line: Police say no report of kidney sales has been received. The public is urged to verify information before sharing.
