Nigeria earned ₦998.50 billion from petrol exports in the first six months of 2026. Premium Motor Spirit, known locally as petrol, ranked seventh among Nigeria’s top exports in Q2 2026 with ₦546.02 billion. That represented a 2.02 per cent share of total exports.
A year earlier, the picture was reversed. PMS did not rank among the top exports in Q1 2025. It featured among the top imports, as Nigeria spent ₦1.76 trillion buying the product. It resurfaced on the export list in Q2 2025 with earnings of ₦85.83 billion. Q2 2026 receipts were more than six times higher.
The export surge that followed in H1 2026 had two causes. The first was the ramp-up of the Dangote Refinery. The second was the war in Iran. Disruptions to energy flows through the Middle East, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, constrained supplies to Asian and European markets. Sanctions limited Russia’s ability to fill the gap. Ukrainian attacks on Russian refining infrastructure reduced available products.
African countries had depended heavily on refined products from suppliers in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. These included the United Arab Emirates through ADNOC, Saudi Arabia through Saudi Aramco, Oman and India. The Dangote Refinery’s proximity to African markets gave it a logistical edge. Shorter shipping distances cut freight and logistics costs.
Dangote Refinery’s location has positioned Nigeria as a supplier to East African markets such as Kenya and Tanzania.
Winners and Losers
Winners: Dangote Refinery, which has turned Nigeria from importer to exporter. African buyers, who gain a closer, cheaper source of refined products. Nigerian trade accounts, which benefit from reduced import bills.
Losers: Traditional suppliers in the Middle East, Asia and Europe, who lose market share. Nigerian consumers, who may see domestic prices rise if exports become more profitable than local sales.
Bottom Line: A private refinery has done what decades of state policy could not. Nigeria now exports petrol. The question is whether the benefit reaches the pump.
