Pastor found dead in church as suicide rumours swirl
A pastor was found dead inside his church in Akwa Ibom. Police have yet to confirm the circumstances amid social media speculation of suicide.
A pastor of the Power in the Word of God for the World Ministry in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, has been found dead inside his church. The incident occurred on Thursday, 23 July, at the church premises on Etim Inyang Street in Oron Local Government Area. Residents suspect suicide, though police have yet to issue an official statement.
Videos circulating on social media show the deceased’s body being removed from the church by suspected members of the congregation. Another video shows the body, wrapped in cloth, inside a police pickup truck belonging to the Oron Area Command. Premium Times could not independently verify claims that the pastor died by suicide.
The police spokesperson for Akwa Ibom, Timfon John, did not respond to calls or text messages. The circumstances surrounding the pastor’s death remain unclear.
The case is the latest in a series of mysterious deaths involving religious figures in Nigeria. The combination of social media speculation and official silence creates a vacuum that rumours fill. The police must investigate thoroughly and communicate transparently to prevent misinformation from spreading.
This echoes the 2022 case of a pastor found dead in a church in Lagos, which also sparked widespread speculation before the police eventually confirmed suicide. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: unanswered questions and a community left in the dark.
The winners: none. The losers: the family of the deceased, who are left without answers; the congregation, which has lost its pastor; and the police, whose silence fuels speculation.
Bottom Line: A pastor is dead in his church. The police are silent. The rumours are spreading. The truth is still waiting.
