Godwin Okoko has won his first professional title. The Nigerian golfer took the Rift Valley Championship at Nakuru Golf Club in Kenya. The tournament ended on Tuesday. It was the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing. Okoko carded a 68, five under par, in the final round. He finished at 210, level with Simon Njogu. He won on the tiebreak.
Nigeria’s professional golf circuit is thin. Few tournaments offer ranking points or meaningful prize money. The Sunshine Tour, based in South Africa, is the continent’s premier golf circuit. The Development Tour gives emerging professionals a route into it. Nigerian golfers have competed on the tour before, but rarely with success. Okoko’s win is a breakthrough for a country better known for football and athletics. The victory earns Order of Merit points that count toward promotion to the main tour.
Okoko’s final round included six birdies on holes 3, 4, 6, 10, 11 and 17, and an eagle on the 16th. He dropped shots on holes 5, 8 and 12 but held his advantage. He won 400,000 Kenyan shillings from a two-million-shilling purse, plus 209 Order of Merit points. “I’m very happy to win my first title,” he said. “The course tested us, but I stayed focused.”
Njogu of Golf Park Golf Club finished second with the same total of 210. He earned 214,000 Kenyan shillings and 172 points. Edwin Mudanyi, the overnight leader, finished third on 213 after a difficult start. Dismas Indiza was fourth on 214. Greg Snow was fifth on 215.
The tournament offered Official World Golf Ranking points for professionals and World Amateur Golf Ranking points for eligible amateurs. NCBA Bank sponsored it. The event brought together professionals and elite amateurs from across the region.
Okoko returns to Nigeria for the Alpha Bravo Golf Classic. It runs from 18 to 21 November at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate.
Winners: Okoko, who gains his first title. Njogu, who pushed him to the end. The Development Tour, which shows its pathway works. Nigerian golf, which gains visibility. Losers: Mudanyi, who led but faded. Indiza and Snow, who finished outside the top three. The other professionals in the field.
Bottom Line: A Nigerian won a professional golf title in Kenya. It is a small event on a development tour. It is also the first. The ranking points and the confidence matter. Okoko has a home event next. He should build on this.
