For the first time, Nigeria will have a beach volleyball team at the Olympic Games. The Nigerian women’s beach volleyball team secured their spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics after defeating Morocco 2-0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship in Alexandria, Egypt, on Saturday. The Nigerian pair won both sets convincingly, 21-17 and 21-10, to clinch gold and the historic Olympic ticket.
The victory capped years of near-misses. Nigeria had reached the final three times before but finished second each time. This time, the team would not be denied. Earlier on Saturday, they dispatched Mozambique in the semi-finals, winning 21-17 in both sets.
Reacting to the achievement, Nigeria Volleyball Federation President Musa Nimrod described the victory as a triumph for the entire nation. “I wish to congratulate Nigerians and thank God. This is the fourth time we are going into the finals; we finished in second place on three occasions. God has done it for us on our fourth trial and given us victory. It is not the Nigeria Volleyball Federation’s success alone but the entire nation,” Nimrod said.
The qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is a watershed moment for Nigerian beach volleyball. The team had been knocking on the door for years, and their persistence has finally paid off. For a sport that has often been overshadowed by athletics and football, this achievement puts beach volleyball firmly on the map. The challenge now is to build on this momentum and prepare for the Olympics, where they will face the world’s best. For the players, the journey from Alexandria to Los Angeles is a dream come true. For Nigerian sports, it reminds us that with the right support, even the most unlikely sports can produce champions.
The winners: the Nigerian women’s beach volleyball team, who have made history; the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, which has overseen the team’s development; and Nigerian sports fans, who have a new team to support. The losers: Morocco, which fell short in the final; and the Nigerian government, which must now invest in the team’s Olympic preparation.
Bottom Line: Nigeria is going to the Olympics in beach volleyball for the first time. History has been made. The question is whether the government will support the team’s Olympic dream or let it fade.
