NGX CEO says AI, energy, agric are Nigeria’s next investment frontiers
The Group CEO of Nigerian Exchange Limited has identified artificial intelligence, energy and agriculture as Nigeria’s next major investment frontiers, urging stakeholders to look beyond oil and gas.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited, Mr. Jude Chiemeka, has identified artificial intelligence, energy and agriculture as Nigeria’s next major investment frontiers. Speaking during an interview in Lagos, Chiemeka said investors should look beyond the traditional sectors of oil and gas and explore emerging opportunities in these high-growth areas.
Chiemeka highlighted the transformative potential of AI across industries, from financial services to healthcare and manufacturing. He also pointed to Nigeria’s vast energy potential, particularly in renewable energy and natural gas, as well as the opportunities in agriculture, which remains a significant contributor to the country’s GDP. He said the NGX is working to support companies in these sectors by providing them with access to capital through the capital market.
The NGX’s focus on AI, energy and agriculture reflects a broader shift in investor sentiment. Nigeria’s oil and gas sector has been the traditional driver of the economy, but the global energy transition and the rise of technology have created new opportunities. The NGX’s role in facilitating investment in these sectors is critical to diversifying the economy and creating jobs.
This echoes the 2010s push for economic diversification, which also identified agriculture and technology as key sectors. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a recognition that Nigeria must move beyond oil.
The winners: companies in the AI, energy and agriculture sectors, which stand to benefit from increased investment; and the Nigerian economy, which gains from diversification. The losers: the traditional oil and gas sector, which faces increased competition for investment; and the Nigerian government, which must create the enabling environment for these sectors to thrive.
Bottom Line: The NGX CEO says AI, energy and agriculture are the next big investment frontiers. The question is whether investors will follow his lead or remain cautious.
