NFF sets up committee to probe football setbacks

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate recent setbacks across international tournaments, including qualification misses for major world events by both the Super Eagles and Super Falcons. The panel is tasked with delivering structural recommendations to rebuild national team competitiveness.
The Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the first time in 30 years and the Super Eagles’ absence from the men’s World Cup have exposed deep-rooted problems in Nigerian football. The NFF’s committee is a recognition that the federation must take responsibility for the decline. The recommendations must address preparation, player development and coaching standards if they are to make a difference.
This echoes the 2010 NFF committee on football development, which also sought to address the decline of Nigerian football. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a search for solutions to persistent problems.
The winners: Nigerian football, if the recommendations are implemented; and the NFF, which can claim to be taking action. The losers: the coaches and officials responsible for the setbacks; and the Nigerian public, who must wait for the results.
Bottom Line: The NFF is investigating why Nigeria keeps losing. The answers are overdue. The question is whether the committee will deliver reforms or just another report.
