The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a Mexican drug suspect. Officers caught Arturo Carrera Loaiza at Lagos airport on 19 August 2026. He was trying to flee the country. The arrest followed operations in Ogun and Oyo states. Agents had already caught several Mexican and Nigerian suspects. A Mexican recruit identified Loaiza from a photograph. Metadata from other photos led agents to a property in Isiata Ugoni Okposi, Ebonyi State. On 30 August, they found chemicals, reaction pots and lab equipment. CCTV footage allegedly shows Loaiza and a Nigerian suspect moving equipment from the site.
Nigeria has been a transit hub for drug trafficking for decades. In the 1980s and 1990s, Nigerian couriers dominated heroin and cocaine routes. The NDLEA was established in 1989. Recent years have seen a shift to methamphetamine production. In 2023, the NDLEA dismantled labs in Lagos and Anambra. The involvement of Mexican cartels is a newer development.
