MultiChoice Nigeria says its operations remain firmly focused on the local market despite being part of French media and entertainment group CANAL+, with key business decisions still made in Nigeria. MultiChoice Nigeria continues to operate within the CANAL+ Group, but CEO Kemi Omotosho said local needs remain central to its decision-making.
She explained that the Nigerian management team handles decisions on pricing, content, channel packages, and distribution for DStv and GOtv, taking into account local market conditions and consumer demand. “Since September 2025, MultiChoice has been part of CANAL+, a global media and entertainment group,” Omotosho said, adding that the Nigerian operation remains focused on its local customers, workforce, partners and creative sector.
CANAL+ operates across 70 countries, giving MultiChoice Nigeria access to international technology, expertise and experience. Omotosho said the company can draw on those resources while adapting them to the realities of the Nigerian market. The arrangement also creates opportunities for ideas and innovations developed in Nigeria to be shared across other markets within the CANAL+ Group.
Omotosho described the approach as one where the company can “think globally, but act locally,” allowing MultiChoice Nigeria to benefit from the scale of its new ownership without losing its local focus. She said the combination of international resources and local decision-making would help the business navigate economic pressures while continuing to invest in Nigerian content, infrastructure and talent.
For the Nigerian creative sector, the assurance of local operational autonomy is significant. The decision-making on content and investment will remain in Nigerian hands. The access to CANAL+’s international resources could help MultiChoice Nigeria produce world-class content.
The winners: MultiChoice Nigeria, which retains local decision-making; and the Nigerian creative sector, which benefits from continued investment. The losers: the competition; and the Nigerian government, which must ensure that the local content is protected.
Bottom Line: MultiChoice Nigeria keeps its local focus under CANAL+. The question is whether the international ownership will ultimately change the local character of the business.
