Man in court for stealing goats worth ₦300,000
A 54-year-old man has been arraigned for allegedly stealing five goats valued at ₦300,000 and injuring a man while trying to escape.
A 54-year-old man, Nureni Rauf, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, over alleged stealing of five goats valued at ₦300,000. Rauf is standing trial on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, dangerous driving and causing bodily harm. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor told the court that Rauf and others still at large committed the offences on July 24 at Oloje, Ireakari area, Soka, Ibadan. Rauf allegedly stole the five goats belonging to one Alhaji Dauda Oyakojo. The prosecutor alleged that Rauf, while driving a Toyota Corolla, drove recklessly while attempting to escape and used the vehicle to injure one Tasiu Hassan.
The case is a reminder that crime, even petty crime, has consequences. The theft of five goats may seem minor, but for the owner, it represents a significant loss of livelihood. The dangerous driving charge adds a layer of seriousness to the case. The court has granted bail, but the case will test the judicial process.
This echoes the 2021 livestock theft cases in Oyo State, which also saw suspects arraigned for stealing animals. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a focus on property crime.
The winners: the complainant, if the court rules in his favour; and the Nigerian judiciary, which will adjudicate the case. The losers: the defendant, if found guilty; and the Nigerian public, who must contend with livestock theft.
Bottom Line: A man is in court for stealing goats and injuring someone while fleeing. The question is whether the court will deliver justice or the case will be delayed.
