Kaduna LGA hits 98% immunisation coverage
Igabi LGA reached 98% of settlements in recent immunisation drive.
Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State says its immunisation campaign against vaccine-preventable diseases reached 98 per cent of settlements and 86 per cent of households during a recent exercise in the area.
Dr Ibrahim Yisa of the National Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Kaduna, disclosed this on Wednesday at a one-day orientation and flag-off of Fathers for Good Health (FGH) also known as Male Majalisa. The orientation is organised for 40 fathers from Igabi, Turunku, Panshanu, and Gwaraji wards.
Yisa said that although the LGA achieved high coverage of settlements and households, only 78 per cent of the targeted children were reached during the exercise. He explained that the identified gap informed the decision to intensify community engagement and vaccination activities, particularly through the involvement of fathers and male household heads in the area.
The official said Igabi was the only LGA in Kaduna State that recorded a poliovirus case between January and June 2026, making the mobilisation of fathers and other community influencers particularly important. He, however, commended the LGA for its performance in the recent exercise, saying its 98 per cent settlement and 86 per cent household coverages were among the best recorded.
The initiative, driven by the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board with support from the United States Government and UNICEF, is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and community engagement.
The winners: children in Igabi LGA, who are being protected from vaccine-preventable diseases; and the Kaduna State Government, which has achieved high coverage. The losers: the children who were missed; and the Nigerian government, which must sustain the momentum.
Bottom Line: Igabi LGA reached 98% of settlements in its immunisation drive. The fight against polio continues. The question is whether the coverage will reach 100%.
