INEC extends candidate submission deadline by three days to July 14
INEC has extended the deadline for political parties to submit candidate names for the 2027 elections by three days, following an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections by three days. The commission announced that the deadline, initially set to expire on Saturday, 11 July 2026, has been extended to midnight on Tuesday, 14 July 2026.
INEC disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna. According to the commission, the extension followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the stipulated timeframe.
"The decision to extend was based on an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council, on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline," the statement said. INEC said the extension underscores its commitment to ensuring inclusiveness in the electoral process while operating within the provisions of the law.
The commission urged all political parties to use the additional period to complete the submission of their candidates' details before the new deadline. "The Commission enjoins political parties to take advantage of this window of opportunity and ensure that all necessary details are uploaded before the expiration of the new deadline," the statement added.
The extension is a small mercy for parties struggling with the logistics of candidate nomination. But it also raises questions about the preparedness of Nigeria's political parties for the 2027 elections. If parties cannot meet basic deadlines for candidate submission, what does that say about their capacity to govern?
This mirrors the 2022 extension of the candidate submission deadline for the 2023 elections, which also followed appeals from political parties. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: political parties scrambling to meet deadlines, and INEC accommodating their delays.
The winners: political parties that needed more time to submit their candidates. The losers: the electoral process, which suffers from delays; and Nigerian voters, who may wonder whether their candidates were chosen in haste.
Bottom Line: INEC has given political parties three extra days to submit their candidates. The question is whether three days is enough to fix what three years of preparation could not.
