Governors lead Nigeria delegation to Canada summit
Governors Lawal, Soludo and Zulum are leading Nigeria’s delegation to the Canada-Africa Investment Summit, focusing on attracting FDI into digital infrastructure, mining and regional development.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and Borno Governor Babagana Zulum are leading Nigeria’s official delegation to the maiden Canada–Africa Investment Summit in Toronto (August 10–15). Discussions focus on attracting foreign direct investment into digital infrastructure, mining, and regional economic development.
The delegation of three governors from different regions of Nigeria reflects a coordinated effort to attract investment. The focus on digital infrastructure and mining aligns with Nigeria’s diversification agenda. The summit provides a platform to showcase investment opportunities to Canadian investors.
From a Nigerian vantage point, the summit is an opportunity to attract FDI and build relationships with Canadian investors. The participation of governors from different states signals a united approach to investment promotion.
This echoes the 2019 investment summits, which also sought to attract FDI to Nigeria. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a focus on investment promotion.
The winners: the Nigerian states represented, which may attract investment; and the Nigerian economy, which gains from FDI. The losers: the Nigerian government, which must ensure that the summit leads to tangible results; and the Nigerian public, who must wait for the benefits.
Bottom Line: Three governors are in Toronto to attract investment. The focus is on digital infrastructure and mining. The question is whether the summit will deliver real investment or just photo opportunities.
