Francis Duru is dead. The Nollywood veteran died on Friday, 23 October 2026, after a brief illness. His family announced the death in a statement on his verified Instagram page. He was 57. The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed the news. Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans.
Duru was one of the pioneer faces of Nollywood. He was born on 27 July 1969 in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and graduated in 1996. He began acting in 1989 with Missing Mark. His breakthrough came in 1995 as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s Rattlesnake. The role made him a household name across Africa. He appeared in hundreds of productions. These included Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020). He won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. He was named a United Nations Ambassador of Peace in 2007.
The family statement was brief. “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” it read. “We appreciate your prayers, love and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace.” The announcement came barely a month after the death of Olu Jacobs.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and three children. The family lost their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024. Duru spoke publicly about the loss, saying it deepened his faith.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria president, Abubakar Yakubu, described Duru as “an iconic actor, a respected veteran and a distinguished practitioner.” He said Duru mentored generations of performers. Kanayo O. Kanayo called him “a consummate actor” and “one of the most flexible, prolific performers Nigeria ever produced.”
Winners: The Actors Guild of Nigeria, which gains a platform for its advocacy. Streaming platforms, which may see renewed interest in his films. Younger actors, who inherit his body of work. Losers: Duru, who is gone. His wife and three children. Nollywood, which loses a founding pillar. Fans, who grew up watching him. The industry, which has lost Olu Jacobs and Duru within a month.
Bottom Line: Francis Duru was 57. He gave Nollywood its face in the 1990s. He worked for over three decades. He mentored others. He is gone. The industry mourns. His films remain.
