Four persons have been confirmed dead in a road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The accident occurred at about 4:00 am at Straight Gate in Ogun State. It involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter truck and an ash-coloured HOWO truck. Eight persons were involved. Four male adults died. One male adult sustained injuries. Three others escaped unhurt. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Command confirmed the incident.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is Nigeria’s busiest highway. It carries over 250,000 vehicles daily. It has a history of fatal crashes. In 2018, a tanker explosion at Otedola Bridge killed dozens. In 2020, multiple crashes occurred during the #EndSARS protests. In 2023, flooding and potholes caused accidents. The causes are consistent: speeding, fatigue, poor vehicle maintenance and weak enforcement. The FRSC has campaigned against these factors for years. The crashes continue.
The FRSC spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, said preliminary investigation indicated speed violation and wrong overtaking. The Mitsubishi driver was reportedly speeding and rammed into the HOWO truck while attempting to overtake. Fatigue was also a factor. The driver was tired. The FRSC received a distress call at 4:33 am and arrived six minutes later. The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere. The bodies were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara. The vehicles were handed to the Police Motor Traffic Division. The Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking. “Better to be late than never,” he said. The advice is standard. Enforcement is the missing piece.
Winners: No winners. The FRSC, which responded promptly, gains no credit from a fatal crash. Losers: The four deceased and their families. The injured victim. Other road users who face continued danger. The transport sector, which loses vehicles and drivers. The economy, which absorbs the cost of lost productivity.
Bottom Line: Four dead at Straight Gate. The causes are known. Speed, fatigue and wrong overtaking. The FRSC can advise. It cannot force compliance. That is the problem.
