A fire has razed 15 shops at Bodija foodstuffs market in Ibadan. The market is in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. The fire occurred on Monday, 19 October 2026. It destroyed property and valuables worth millions of naira. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the incident. No casualties were recorded.
Bodija market is one of Nigeria’s largest food markets. It supplies produce across the southwest. Fires are recurrent. In 2021, a fire destroyed sections of the market. In 2023, another blaze damaged shops. The causes are consistent: faulty wiring, illegal connections, poor maintenance and the absence of fire safety equipment. Traders lose their stock. Consumers face price spikes. The cycle repeats because enforcement is weak.
The fire services agency received a distress call at about 4:34 am. The caller was identified as SFS Lawal. The firefighting crew, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele, mobilised. On arrival, they found 15 of a row of 44 shops engulfed in flames and thick smoke. The crew brought the fire under control. It did not spread beyond where it was met.
The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Services Reform, Moroof Akinwande, attributed the fire to a suspected electrical fault. He said the surge came from faulty wiring in one of the shops. He stressed the importance of installing and maintaining functional fire extinguishers in commercial buildings. Early containment saves property. Without extinguishers, small fires become infernos.
Winners: The fire service, which responded promptly. No one else. Losers: The traders who lost shops and stock. Their families. Consumers who face higher food prices. The market economy, which absorbs the loss. Taxpayers, if relief funds are disbursed. The state government, whose safety enforcement is questioned.
Bottom Line: Fifteen shops burned. Millions lost. The cause is known. Electrical faults are common. Fire extinguishers are rare. The fire service arrived in time. The next fire may not wait. Bodija needs wiring audits. It needs extinguishers. It needs enforcement. Traders cannot afford another blaze.
