The Family Homes Funds Limited and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund have begun construction of 257 housing units for police officers. The groundbreaking ceremony held on Wednesday at Grand Luvu, Masaka, Nasarawa State. The project is designed to provide affordable homes for police personnel and their families.
Police housing in Nigeria is inadequate. Many officers live in substandard quarters. Others cannot afford rent. The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established in 2019 to improve police welfare. In March 2025, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with FHFL to provide housing for serving and retiring officers. The current project is part of that agreement.
The Managing Director of FHFL, AbdulMutallab Mukhtar, said the estate will comprise two and three-bedroom houses. “Today, we break ground to deliver 257 affordable homes for police personnel and their families here at Masaka, beginning with 50 units,” he said. The construction is expected to be completed within nine months. FHFL will facilitate construction. NPTF will provide infrastructure.
The Executive Secretary of NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, said the project reflects a commitment to improving police welfare. “Effective policing requires more than operational equipment and training. It also requires a motivated workforce whose basic welfare needs are adequately addressed,” he said. He said the NPTF plans to identify additional locations across the country.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, commended the partnership. He urged developers to meet specifications and timelines.
Winners: Police officers, who gain affordable housing. Their families, who gain stability. FHFL, which gains a project. NPTF, which shows delivery. Nasarawa State, which gains economic activity. Losers: Contractors who did not win the bid. Police officers not selected. Taxpayers, if the project is mismanaged. No serious losers if the homes are delivered.
Bottom Line: Police officers need housing. FHFL and NPTF are building 257 units. The first 50 are under construction. The project will take nine months. If delivered, it will improve welfare. It will also improve security. Housing is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
