FAAC disbursements exceed ₦2tn amid reforms
Economic reforms under the current administration have pushed monthly Federal Account Allocation Committee disbursements past ₦2 trillion, significantly higher than previous averages.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele reported that economic reforms under the current administration pushed monthly Federal Account Allocation Committee disbursements past ₦2 trillion, up significantly from previous averages. The increase in disbursements reflects the government’s improved revenue collection and fiscal performance.
The rise in FAAC disbursements is a positive sign for the Nigerian economy. The increased revenue will allow the federal, state and local governments to fund infrastructure and social programmes. The success of the reforms will depend on the government’s ability to sustain the revenue growth.
This echoes the 2018 FAAC disbursement increases, which also reflected improved revenue collection. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a focus on fiscal performance.
The winners: the federal, state and local governments, which have more funds; and the Nigerian public, who may benefit from improved services. The losers: the Nigerian government, which must sustain the revenue growth; and the Nigerian public, who must trust that the funds will be used wisely.
Bottom Line: FAAC disbursements have surpassed ₦2 trillion. Reforms are working. The question is whether the money will be spent on infrastructure or lost to corruption.
