Explosion at Enugu substation triggers blackout in 30 communities
An explosion at the Gariki Injection Substation in Enugu has plunged parts of the state capital into darkness, affecting dozens of communities.
An explosion at the Gariki Injection Substation in Enugu has plunged parts of the state capital into darkness. The MainPower Electricity Distribution Company (MEDL), a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), announced that the incident occurred at about 7:30 pm on Friday. The explosion affected the indoor 11kV breaker at the injection substation.
Areas experiencing the blackout include Gariki Market, Mayor Market, Roban Stores (Agbani Road), Crunchies (Agbani Road), Mobile Police Barracks, Amechi Road, Upper Mount, Ikiriki, Ozalla Street, Egbonnaji, Nnaji Ogbodo, Idaw River, Igbariam Street, Liberation, Mount, Umuchu, Achina, Vance, Unubi, Enugu Agidi, Amawbia, Amokwe, Kenneth, Amah and Hill Crest. The Army 11kV feeder areas, including Army Barracks and One Day Road, were also affected .
MEDL spokesperson Emeka Ezeh said the company’s technical team is currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the damage and has commenced restoration work. He apologised for the inconvenience and appealed for patience. The outage comes months after the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission downgraded some of MainPower’s feeders for failing to meet the minimum daily electricity supply requirement .
This is not the first time Enugu has experienced prolonged blackouts. In May 2026, residents of several communities in the state capital decried a 10-day blackout caused by a rainstorm that damaged electricity infrastructure. The latest explosion suggests that Nigeria’s electricity distribution infrastructure remains fragile, particularly in the South-east, where the privatised electricity company has struggled to maintain reliable supply.
This echoes the 2024 power outages in the South-east, which also exposed the fragility of electricity distribution. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: communities left in darkness and a utility company struggling to restore service.
The winners: none. The losers: Enugu residents and businesses, who must endure the blackout; and the Nigerian electricity sector, which faces yet another infrastructure failure.
Bottom Line: An explosion at an Enugu substation has plunged 30 communities into darkness. The utility company says it is working on repairs. The residents are waiting. This is Nigeria’s electricity story in a nutshell.
