EFCC arraigns ex-Warri refinery MD over ₦1.339bn money laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the former Managing Director of Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, Bola O. Afolabi, before a Federal High Court in Lagos on charges of money laundering involving ₦1.339 billion. Afolabi was arraigned on seven counts of money laundering, conspiracy and abuse of office.
The EFCC alleged that Afolabi, during his tenure as MD of the Warri Refinery, diverted funds meant for the rehabilitation of the refinery into personal accounts. The commission also alleged that he engaged in fraudulent procurement practices, awarding contracts to companies in which he had an interest. Afolabi pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The case is the latest in a series of corruption investigations targeting the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and its subsidiaries.
