Security operatives comprising DSS officers, other agencies and local vigilantes have rescued a kidnap victim and neutralised two suspected kidnappers in Imo. The Department of State Services (DSS) disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Owerri on Sunday. According to the statement, the operatives rescued 29-year-old Ibeabuchi Adibenma, who was abducted in Orlu Local Government Area.
Adibenma was kidnapped at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, around Afor-Ogidi Market in Isiala Amaifeke community. The victim was reportedly returning from Umuna, Orlu market, when the armed assailants intercepted his vehicle near the market. The attackers operated on two motorcycles and double-crossed the victim before forcing him to an undisclosed location. Following the abduction, the kidnappers contacted Adibenma’s family and demanded ₦15 million ransom for his release.
However, on Aug. 20, security operatives launched a coordinated operation to rescue the victim from his abductors. According to the DSS, the operation led to Adibenma’s rescue at Ihioma Community in Orlu. “Two suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate were neutralised during the operation, while two high-calibre weapons and ammunition were recovered.” The rescued victim was subsequently taken into protective custody before being reunited with his family.
The successful operation is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led security operations in Imo State. The collaboration between the DSS, other security agencies and local vigilantes demonstrates the importance of community engagement in tackling insecurity. The rescue of Adibenma and the neutralisation of two suspects will send a strong message to other kidnappers operating in the state. However, the underlying drivers of kidnapping remain unresolved, and the government must address the root causes of the insecurity.
This echoes the 2022 rescue operations in Imo, which also saw security forces successfully free kidnap victims. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a demonstration of security capability.
The winners: the rescued victim and his family, who have been reunited; and the security operatives, who demonstrated professionalism. The losers: the neutralised suspects; and the kidnap syndicate, which has lost members.
Bottom Line: A kidnap victim is free, and two suspects are dead. The operation was a success. The question is whether the government can sustain the momentum or the kidnappers will regroup.
