Dangote remains Europe’s top jet fuel supplier
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery retained its status as Europe’s primary external jet fuel supplier for a second consecutive month, outpacing U.S. Gulf Coast export shipments to European aviation hubs.
Maritime shipping logs confirmed that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery retained its status as Europe’s primary external supplier of jet fuel for a second consecutive month. S&P Global Commodity Insights reported that sustained high-capacity refining outpaced U.S. Gulf Coast export shipments to European aviation hubs.
The refinery’s dominance in the European jet fuel market is a testament to its capacity and efficiency. The sustained high-capacity refining has outpaced U.S. exports, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global aviation fuel market. The exports also provide a vital source of foreign exchange for Nigeria.
This echoes the 2024 emergence of Nigeria as a jet fuel exporter, which marked a significant shift in global fuel dynamics. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: Nigeria becoming a key player in the global fuel market.
The winners: Dangote Refinery, which has captured a significant market share; and the Nigerian economy, which gains from export earnings. The losers: U.S. Gulf Coast exporters, who face increased competition; and Nigerian consumers, who continue to pay high petrol prices while the refinery exports fuel abroad.
Bottom Line: Dangote is still the top jet fuel supplier to Europe. Nigeria’s refinery is a global player. The question is whether domestic consumers will benefit from the success.
