Dangote Refinery raises $2.5bn private equity for expansion
Dangote Petroleum Refinery completed a $2.5 billion private equity placement, anchored by AFC and Afreximbank, to finance expansion projects at its Lekki complex.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals completed a $2.5 billion private equity placement to finance ongoing expansion projects at its 700,000 bpd Lekki complex. Anchored by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Afreximbank’s India Infra Buildco vehicle, the oversubscribed transaction stands as one of the largest private equity raises in African corporate history.
The successful private equity placement is a vote of confidence in the Dangote Refinery’s future. The expansion projects will increase the refinery’s capacity and improve its efficiency. The involvement of AFC and Afreximbank signals that the project has strong institutional backing.
This echoes the 2021 Dangote Refinery financing, which also attracted significant institutional investment. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a major infrastructure project attracting significant investment.
The winners: Dangote Refinery, which has secured financing for expansion; and the Nigerian economy, which benefits from the refinery’s operations. The losers: the Nigerian government, which must ensure that the refinery’s expansion benefits the broader economy; and the Nigerian public, who must wait for the benefits to materialise.
Bottom Line: Dangote Refinery has raised $2.5 billion for expansion. The financing is a vote of confidence. The question is whether the expansion will be completed on time and within budget.
