An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday, remanded a 61-year-old man, Cosmos Oluwafemi, in a correctional centre over alleged murder attempt. The Police had, through a Form K application, sought the remand of the defendant, pending legal advice from the office of a Director of Public Prosecution. The prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant allegedly attempted to murder one Aderibigba Olawale on Aug.15 at about 05:00 p.m in Iyin-Ekiti.
Oriyomi alleged that the defendant went with members of his syndicate to the farmland where the complainant and his people were working. He alleged that the defendant was fully armed with dangerous weapons, in the process, he was seriously beaten and warned by the defendant to desist from stepping into the farm. According to him, the offence contravened Section 241 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The plea by the defendant for leniency was rejected by the court. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional centre, pending the issuance of legal advice. Adeosun thereafter adjourned the case to Sept. 25 for mention.
The winners: the complainant, who has seen the suspect remanded; and the judicial system, which has taken action. The losers: the defendant, who remains in custody; and the Nigerian public, who must trust the judicial process.
Bottom Line: A 61-year-old is in custody for an alleged murder attempt. The case continues next month.
