Council approves NABTE, ITF mandate alignment to boost skills
The National Council on Skills has ratified the alignment of the mandates of NABTE and the ITF to support President Tinubu’s industrialisation agenda.
The National Council on Skills has ratified the alignment of the mandates of the Nigeria Board for Technical Education (NABTE) and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). Chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the council approved the harmonisation to support President Tinubu’s industrialisation agenda. The initiative will focus on developing vocational skills and training for young Nigerians.
The alignment is intended to streamline the delivery of vocational training and skills development, reducing duplication and improving efficiency. Nigeria has long struggled with a skills gap, with millions of young people lacking the training needed for employment. The harmonisation is a step towards addressing that gap.
This echoes the 2010s efforts to reform technical and vocational education, which also sought to improve coordination between agencies. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a recognition that skills development is essential for economic growth.
The winners: young Nigerians, who stand to benefit from improved skills training, and the Nigerian economy, which gains a more skilled workforce. The losers: the agencies that have lost their autonomy, and the Nigerian public, which has heard similar promises before.
Bottom Line: NABTE and ITF are aligning their mandates. Skills development is the goal. The question is whether the harmonisation will deliver results or just more bureaucracy.
