Cardoso, Okonjo-Iweala to discuss macro stability at Africa forum
The CBN will host a high-level fireside dialogue between CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso and WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced it will host a high-level fireside dialogue between CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Abuja. Scheduled for July 29–30, the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum will bring together central bankers and finance ministers to examine macroeconomic stability, cross-border payments and regional integration.
The dialogue is a significant moment for Nigeria’s economic diplomacy. Cardoso and Okonjo-Iweala are two of Africa’s most influential economic policymakers. Their discussion is expected to focus on the challenges facing African economies, including inflation, debt and trade. The forum will also provide an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its economic reforms.
The forum reflects Nigeria’s growing role in African economic governance. The country has been at the forefront of efforts to promote regional integration and macroeconomic stability. The fireside dialogue is a recognition of that leadership.
This echoes the 2019 Africa Emerging Markets Forum, which also brought together policymakers to discuss economic challenges. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a recognition that Africa must work together to address its economic challenges.
The winners: the Nigerian economy, which gains visibility; and the African continent, which benefits from policy dialogue. The losers: the Nigerian government, which must ensure that the dialogue leads to action; and the Nigerian public, who must wait for the benefits to materialise.
Bottom Line: Cardoso and Okonjo-Iweala will discuss Africa’s economic future. The forum is a chance for Nigeria to showcase its leadership. The question is whether the dialogue will lead to action.
