Nigerian players across Europe made a strong statement over the weekend, with Akor Adams, Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Boniface, Maduka Okoye, Moses Usor and Rafiu Durosinmi among those who delivered impressive performances for their respective clubs ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Akor Adams enjoyed a dream competitive debut for Venezia, scoring twice and providing an assist to inspire a 3-2 comeback victory over Modena in the Coppa Italia. Samuel Chukwueze also produced a performance to remember, scoring once and providing two assists as AC Milan defeated Manchester United 4-2 in a pre-season friendly. Victor Boniface was also on target, scoring a late winner as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Newcastle United 2-1. Maduka Okoye made a positive return to competitive action, keeping a clean sheet as Udinese defeated Padova 1-0. Moses Usor was another Nigerian who caught the eye, producing a scintillating performance in LASK’s 4-1 Austrian Bundesliga victory over Austria Wien, registering four assists. Rafiu Durosinmi continued his impressive start to the campaign, scoring from the penalty spot for Genk.
The performances are a reminder of the depth of Nigerian talent in Europe. With the Super Eagles struggling in recent years, the emergence of new stars and the resurgence of established ones is a positive sign. The competition for places in the national team is intensifying, and that can only be a good thing.
This echoes the 2022 weekend performances of Nigerian players in Europe, which also saw several players shine. The mechanism then was different, but the result was the same: a showcase of Nigerian talent.
The winners: the players who performed well; and the Super Eagles, who have a deep pool of talent to select from. The losers: the players who did not perform; and the Nigerian Football Federation, which must ensure the players are properly integrated into the national team.
Bottom Line: Nigerian stars are shining across Europe. The Super Eagles have a deep pool of talent. The question is whether the national team can harness that talent.
