Benin City is emerging as a major creative and cultural hub. For decades, Lagos has dominated Nigeria’s cultural calendar. Between October and December, it hosts fashion weeks, art fairs and concerts. But Benin City, just an hour’s flight away, is building a season of its own. The centrepiece is the 10th anniversary of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. The programme runs from 4 October to 21 November 2026.
Benin City was the capital of the Kingdom of Benin, one of Africa’s greatest civilisations. It is known for its bronze casting, an unbroken royal institution and a thriving contemporary arts scene. The city has produced artists, musicians and writers who have shaped Nigerian culture. But it has often been overshadowed by Lagos. The current cultural push is an attempt to change that.
The anniversary programme has featured food festivals, art and photography exhibitions, trade fairs and musical performances. Artists like Shallipopi, Hammerboi and Young Bolivia have performed. A royal durbar attended by representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto reinforced Edo’s position as a meeting place of cultures.
Beyond the royal anniversary, the November calendar is packed. On 2 to 4 November, the Visual Storytelling Conference brought together photographers, filmmakers and visual artists. On 5 November, Obi’s House Benin held a DJ showcase. The Benin Art Fair runs from 5 to 8 November under the theme “Art in the Ancient City.” It explores ties between historical craftsmanship and contemporary identity. The Black Muse Art Festival runs from 7 to 10 November, founded by Victor Ehikhamenor and inspired by Ben Okri. It features sculpture exhibitions, film screenings and ecological activities. The Benin Arts and Books Festival runs from 12 to 14 November. Benin Tech Fest 2.0 holds on 26 November, focused on technology and startup growth.
Winners: Benin City, which gains visibility. The Oba, whose anniversary anchors the season. Artists, who gain platforms. Local businesses, which gain customers. The creative economy, which gains diversity. Losers: Lagos, which faces competition. Artists not included. Critics who see the calendar as elite. No serious losers if the season sustains.
Bottom Line: Benin City has a cultural calendar. The Oba’s anniversary is the anchor. Art, tech and literature fill the month. Lagos is no longer the only stage. The creative economy is bigger than one city.
